Welcome to...Ashby de la Zouch!

Crenny Janey's execution site & visitor centre.

Crenny Janey! Oooohh! Just the mere mention of her name would once strike terror into the heart of even the strongest warrior! It was on the island just outside Tesco, that the fearsome witch was finally burnt to death at the stake in the infamous 1654 Tesco Island Witch Burnings.

The picture on the left shows the scene as it looks now, with Tesco just visible to the left and Tesco Island just to the right.

This scene is vastly different however to what it looked like in 1654; below you can see an engraving that was made at the time of the burning...as you can see for yourself, the scene has changed beyond recognition;

At the site is the Official Crenny Janey 1654 Tesco Island Witch Burnings Visitor Centre, which features visually graphic pictures of modern day burnings and mutilations, all in full colour. There is also a kiddies fun room.

Admission to the visitor centre is free (to children under 2 months old). Inside you can read all about the now defunct local mining industry which, incidently, has got absolutely nothing to do with The Burnings itself.
