Ashby de la Zouch in Bloom.

Above you can see the Ashby de la Zouch 2000 entry for the annual Britain in Bloom competition. This year they came 2397th (last) which was very pleasing as this was a vast improvement over previous years. Below you can read the full comments of the judges;

 'This year Ashby de la Zouch managed to fulfil the criteria for entering the Britain in Bloom competition by actually growing some flowers. Their efforts, I feel, should be commended, not only from the Britain in Bloom committee but from me personally, as I feel a lot of work must have been done to manage to grow 79 hectares of flowers. However, on a more judgemental note, I must point out that there really is a limit to the amount of sunflowers a person can stomach in any one viewing. Perhaps next year Ashby may like to consider growing something else instead.'

Eric Edwards, Senior judge, Britain in Bloom Committee.

Ashby Town Council made note of the above comments and reacted accordingly for this year's entry by not planting sunflowers. This year they planted daffodils instead. Unfortunatly, nobody seemed to remember that daffodils grow and die withing the months of March and April; the competition is judged in late August so a mammoth effort is now taking place to grow a really big field full of daisies.
