Jean Arp (1887-1966) had been a painter, a sculptor and a poet. He was a prominent experimentor of automated design and created this technique to generate his sculptures. Beginning in 1917, Arp's work changed away from geometric types toward a far more substance, organic style. During a visit to a Swiss lake resort, Arp was impressed to stimulate the branches, rocks, origins, and grasses he noticed, working with brush and ink. He shortly started utilizing comparable forms in the drawings, generating free flowing forms that advise the absence of deliberate consciousness or inhibition.

Automated drawing was developed by the surrealists, as a method of articulating the subconscious. In automatic design, the hand is permitted to go 'randomly' over the report. In 1915, Arp exhibited their first abstracts in Zurich and joined the Zurich DADA group. Arp also started his experiments with automatic structure with arbitrary and possibility elements and collectivism. In 1925 additionally he participated in 1st Surrealist convention and signed up with the Surrealist group in Paris.

Surrealism

Arp had a handful of important exhibitions in New York, in which in 1948 he published 'back at my Way Poetry' and 'Essays I912-47'. He went to the U.S.A. in 1949 and 1950.
